On January 2-3, 2025, the 2024 Annual Meeting for Advancing the Implementation of the UN Ocean Decade in China and the Meeting of Member Institutions of the "Ocean Decade in Schools" Alliance was held at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen. The meeting, themed "Deep Engagement in International Processes, Effectively Showcasing Chinese Achievements," summarized the latest developments of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), exchanged information and experiences, planned future work directions, and injected strong new vitality into the implementation of the Ocean Decade in China.
The meeting was jointly hosted by the Decade Collaborative Centre on Ocean-Climate Nexus and Coordination, SUSTech Marine Academy, Shenzhen Marine University Preparatory Office, and the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources. It brought together 140 experts and representatives from 75 units, including domestic leading units of the Ocean Decade action, as well as supporting entities such as management departments, universities, primary and secondary schools, enterprises, international organizations, and NGOs.
During the meeting, Dr. Chong Chen, representing the Global Estuaries Monitoring Programme, introduced the major research progress, highlights, challenges, and future implementation plans achieved in 2024. In the strategic seminar section, participants engaged in vigorous discussions on topics such as establishing and promoting the Ocean Decade progress report in China, enhancing the international influence of China's Ocean Decade actions, driving the implementation of Ocean Decade outcomes, and improving ocean literacy.
Participants reached multiple consensuses during the meeting.
