Dear GEM Collaborators,
Happy New Year!
It is with great pleasure that we update you on the latest advancements within our GEM Programme. We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of the first phase of GEM sampling activities. Over the past year and a half (from July 2023 to Dec 2024), we have received samples from 161 estuaries worldwide, spanning 45 different countries and regions. Notably, 47 estuaries have undergone sampling procedures in both dry and wet seasons.
We understand the eagerness of our partners to access the analysis results of the collected samples. Currently, our research team is diligently engaged in sample processing and data analysis, and we anticipate sharing the outcomes with all partners by the year’s end.
Furthermore, we have observed that some partners are still in the midst of their sampling endeavors and have yet to return samples. Please rest assured that we have extended the sampling period by two months. Although the window for submitting sampling proposals has closed, the avenue for receiving samples remains open. Until the end of February 2025, partners can reach out to us to dispatch samples from local estuaries.
This year, a focal point of the GEM Programme is the preparation for the second phase. In this upcoming phase, our emphasis will be on utilizing passive samplers for estuarine pollutant monitoring, alongside the collection of global estuarine sediment samples and the surveillance of emerging pollutants within the sediments. We have initiated a registration questionnaire for prospective partners in the second phase (https://cityuhk.questionpro.com/t/AYCicZ49AL). Interested collaborators are encouraged to complete the questionnaire to receive further instructions. The official launch of the second phase is anticipated for August this year.
Lastly, we are delighted to support the promotion of a survey questionnaire from our partner, Dr. Osiris Díaz Torres. Kindly take note of the following details for your attention.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your steadfast support of the GEM Programme. Here’s to a year filled with new accomplishments and continued collaboration!
Warm regards,
Dr. Chong Chen
Manager of the GEM Programme
[Survey Information]
Dear colleague,
We are writing to invite you to participate in an online survey dedicated to understanding and quantifying barriers to, and solutions for, freshwater-marine scientific collaboration, developed by four early career scientists at water@leeds at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, and the Sustainability and Climate Change Lab at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Guadalajara, México.
To start the questionnaire, please click on one of the following links:
Survey in English: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/leeds/bridging-the-disconnect-between-freshwater-and-marine-researc-1
Survey in Spanish: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/leeds/cerrando-la-brecha-entre-las-comunidades-de-investigacion-de-ag
This online survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. This online survey will start with an introduction followed by a few pre-survey questions (demographic survey), 5 general questions related to research barriers prohibiting freshwater-marine collaboration, a series of optional questions related to modelling priorities, and two overarching summary questions.
This survey has undergone and been approved by a University of Leeds ethical review. Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. Your responses will be anonymous and only used for research purposes.
We kindly ask you to complete the survey by January 15, 2025. Please feel free to share the survey link with your networks.
Using the research data from this questionnaire, we anticipate writing an expert opinion review article.
Thank you very much in advance for participating in our online survey. We really appreciate your time and support. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us: river2ocean@leeds.ac.uk
With kind regards,
Dr. Osiris Díaz Torres, Dr. Danielle Robinson, Dr. Alejandra Zazueta Lopez, Dr. Taylor Maavara
